Money Changes Everything
When I was in college, I dated this guy who came from a pretty average background. He had grown up middle class, graduated with decent grades, and was attending the same state college I was going to. There was nothing “high class” about it. I mean, he carried himself well and dressed nice, but he was in no way the “fancy car, designer labels, too good for anything but the best” type, and it was for that reason that I loved him so. We spent two great years together. Going out in his dad’s old SUV on clear nights, just to lay out and stare at the stars. Then, his grandmother died. She had been ill for over a year, but took a sudden decline in health and passed away quickly. It was a hard blow to everyone. I was there for him every step of the way, then life changed forever.
His grandmother had kept it a secret as to just how much money she had. She had come from a well off family and her parents had left her money (she was the only child). Plus, her husband had owned a few successful businesses and had sold them before he retired. My boyfriend’s dad and his mother received $8 million and my boyfriend, being the only grandchild, received $2.5 million. It was like an overnight change. His parents paid off their house and bought a new truck. My boyfriend, on the other hand, bought a luxury condo in the heart of downtown, a brand new fully loaded Lexus, and a brand new very expensive wardrobe. He took me shopping and tried to outfit me in all if these tight, revealing outfits that cost way too much. I was uncomfortable the entire time. We went to get a bite to eat at some expensive restaurant and he had the audacity to tell me that I needed to change a few things in order to meet his standards. All I could do was sit there bewildered. I said that I wasn’t changing for anyone and that I was the same person with or without money. He chuckled then told me to “step it up.” He said that he wanted someone who would carry themselves by his standards, then he said he needed to find that girl. Though he did pay for my cab ride home!

Good thing you saw that side of him right away, OP. I think if he changed that quickly right after receiving the money, he would’ve changed as soon as he started making his own money. Although, OP, you must not live in a terrible huge city, considering I can name a few cities where $2.5 million would only just cover the cost of a “downtown” luxury condo.
2.5 million? Pfft. That’ll barely cover the cost of an education and housing. And the housing will have to be fairly modest in any major metropolitan area. Your boyfriend has no clue what real money is. I predict he will be bankrupt in 5 years.
Congratulations for sticking to your values in the glare of this little windfall. It is easy to be swept away by a large, sudden, influx of money. You showed that you have better character than your ex.
A fool and his money are soon parted.
With an attitude like that, his $2.5mill will be gone in short order, and a few large breasted blondes who know how to play the game will get a few months of fun out of life.

And I need to say something else here. Correct me if I’m wrong, but unless it’s written into the will, dude would get nothing for being a grandchild, especially if he has aunts and/or uncles.
My own grandmother passed away a little over a month ago and I’m the eldest grandchild of 2 (my cousin is 17 years younger than me), but regardless if I was the only one, I wouldn’t be entitled to anything because everything would go to my dad and his 2 siblings, since my grandfather passed away in 1993. From what I’ve learned, estates are given to the surviving spouse, and if there is no surviving spouse, then it gets divided up among the children and so on.
(My parents are looking out for me as they all divide up the stuff, and I’m getting a few things, but as for money, I don’t get anything)
After taxes, there really isn’t that much left – especially spending it as quickly as he seems to be running thru it.
It sounds like you have a level head on your shoulders. For that – be proud and hold it up high. He will be broke and have to live off mommy and daddy in about six months. Here in So. Cal. he couldn’t get the things you mentioned and have ANY money left, so congrats on getting rid of him for your own good.

Contrary to popular belief 2.5 million is a lot of money, that said if he does not manage it well, he could loose it all !
Having been around single people with big money, they do one of four things 1)find a well bred trophy spouse 2) find a bimbo or douche, basically a male or female hooker 3) Stay loyal and true with the one they are with 4) find someone with as much money as they have.
My guess he was going to try to make you the trophy wife… sounds like its not to be !

Glad you kept your head on your shoulders. You sound like one fabulous person. In a few months, his money will be gone and he will realize how stupid he was. Anyway, at least he did have the decency to pay for your cab because you weren’t going to succumb to his now shallow as hell standards.

The way you phrased that implies that was the only reason (or main one anyway) you loved him. Did you by any chance mean, “that was one of the things I loved about him”? It’s an important distinction because the two things can say very different things about your character.
