Elite Gamer Girl
I have always played online games since I first got an internet connection. My older brother played Ultima Online and I jumped in head first as a teen. Asheron’s Call, EverQuest, and eventually World of Warcraft.
I spent countless hours in these games with some of the most elite guilds on the servers I was on. I had a few girlfriends outside of the game which didn’t work out, but eventually playing WoW I met a really sweet girl in my guild I’ll call ‘Amy’. We hunted together, fought out items in the game together, and spent ages talking on Ventrilo each day. Over time we became extremely close and started an online relationship.
After over a year of knowing each other she made the big move from Los Angeles to Cleveland. I am more or less the lone systems administrator for a big firm so I am either working on servers or playing the game. She originally had a telemarketing job, but claimed she was having trouble finding work when she moved in. Amy refused to work outside her field saying she had a very nasty social disease and was afraid of new places full of unfamiliar people and telemarketing allowed her to not directly interact with people. I was happy and made enough money for the both of us, so I was not stressing it so much in the beginning.
We spent about a year and a half together spending almost every night in game together at our gaming stations playing WoW. That is when a big chain of events happened.
The firm I worked for merged into a big national chain and asked me to travel a few days a month to help get networks set up in gentrified buildings the firm took over in NYC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. I was gone two weeks of every month for six months. In game a close friend of mine who I knew for eight years took his own life. And, honestly, after more than 14 years of MMORPGs with no break I was burned out. I just didn’t want to log into WoW and went on hiatus.
Amy and I still spoke on Ventrilo when I was out. Our friend who committed suicide was our guild leader and the guild split in the ensuing chaos of folks deciding who was going to run it.
Things seemed to not be so different. We spent more time away from the computer making sure to watch at least one movie together each evening of the week. Amy would stay up late like we used to playing. At this point I started pushing her to work again hoping a set schedule would keep her from being up until 4am each evening and sleeping all day. I even offered to co-sign for student loans if she wanted to continue college as she dropped out years ago due to financial reasons. It seemed to irritate Amy when I spoke of work or school. But, we were talking about getting married too and it seemed to be okay.
I went to Philly last year to finish up the final implementation of the internal network there and was only gone four days. Each night we spoke until the forth night before I was to drive home. She didn’t answer her phone or log on Ventrilo. Amy said the day before she didn’t feel well and I assumed she was just sick and sleeping.
I drove home and entered our apartment and found she cleaned house. The computers, the televisions, the Wii, Xbox 360, Microwave, and my late mother’s jewelry… She stole all of it. Amy kept her computer, but pawned everything else for quick cash. She could only pull $300 out of the account due to the daily limit. I found one of the pawn tickets in the garbage and filed a police report. It still took three months to get my computer, TV, and microwave back. Everything else was already sold.
Getting on Ventrilo and WoW she was still playing. She wouldn’t reply to my messages, but I got a private message from an ex-officer in our former guild that more or less said, “Sorry, Bro. Her and I have been an item for months now and we fell in love. You’re a good guy, but she fell out of love with you and doesn’t want to talk to you anymore.” I told him that she stole most of the electronics in the house and he ensured me he knew and she just needed the money to travel and would pay me back some day.
I did find an address for her through googling him. I gave it to the police, but nothing has come of it in 90 days. I have replaced most of my stuff, but I was very angry for a while. I’m still very hurt. Perhaps the silver lining is that I am too disgusted to continue with my MMORPG addiction and for the first time since adolescence I am getting out into the real world.

I don’t think you really understand what “deal me in” means, considering the rest of your story…
But I think the story would have been much more concise had you said:
“I met a girl online. We moved in together. She stole all of my stuff and dumped me in a super douchey, round-about way. The end.”
Yeah…
Too bad. At least it got you out of your house and into the world, though. I think losing a few gadgets is worth it. I never really understood the appeal of spending all your time logged into a fantasy world.
For some reason I get the feeling you were logged in to these games way more than you were letting on. But at least now you’re actually attempting to have a life where you’re doing things around people. Have fun with that. There’s no achievement points here, sometimes a high five or respect knuckles give the same effect.
That’s unfortunate, OP. You should have kept the message where the dude said he knew about the theft and given that to the police. That would have counted as evidence against both of them.
Sorry about your experience, OP. I feel like I should point out to you that if she had a “social disease,” that means she had an STD. If she had a hard time in social situations, she had a social anxiety disorder.
Yeah, Barbara, I kind giggled about “nasty social disease”… I truly hope the OP meant social anxiety disorder, and not an STD. (Word choices matter,OP !)
Another reason why I will never recommend conducting a romantic relationship online with a person you never knew before “meeting” online.
OP, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with MMPORGS (I have played WoW myself!)–but when the game becomes an obsession and you are substituting “online relationships” for actual human interaction, that’s when it becomes the real problem.
I hope all your legal woes become resolved soon. I also hope the douchebag she left you for (who KNEW what she did and was OK with it!!), well I hope he gets his just desserts for sheltering and abetting that bitch.
